Reflecting on the Internet

WEEK TWO: Internet and Netiquette.

There is so much that students can do with the Internet. Not only can they communicate with international students, they can gain from others' knowledge and experiences, participate in chat rooms, share ideas and solutions and learn about the many diverse cultures out there. Teachers can use the internet to adjust to the different learning styles in the classroom. Teachers have the chance to be able to teach at more than one place simultaneously.

Netiquette, or net etiquette, refers to etiquette on the Internet. Good netiquette involves respecting others' privacy and not doing anything online that will annoy or frustrate other people. Three areas where good netiquette is highly stressed are e-mail, online chat, and newsgroups. For example, people that spam other users with unwanted e-mails or flood them with messages have very bad netiquette.

I found out that Learning is the acquisition of knowledge or skills through study, experience, or being taught. We briefly touched on the different types of learners.

Types of learners:

Theories of Learning:

Behaviorist - is a learning theory that only focuses on objectively observable behaviors and discounts and independent activities of the mind. They define learning as nothing more than the acquisition of new behavior based on environmental conditions.

Constructivist - is basically a theory based on observation and scientific study about how people learn. People acquiring their own understanding and knowledge through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences.

Cognitivist - This theory defines learning as a "semi-permanent change in mental processes or associations. " Cognitivist focus more on the internal processes and connections that take place during learning.

We also looked at the Digital Natives compared to Digital Immigrants. Digital Natives are basically people who were born in the age of technology, having the ability to manipulate technologies effectively. Digital Immigrants on the other hand are people who were born in a time where technologies were not easily accessible by the public.
